| Watch the Progress of the Rehab of 27 Wilson Street January 28th Lots of work sheet rocking was completed on the 28th. We are so excited that all the bedrooms are just about complete!! With our new drywall lift on site, it is now a pleasure to put up the ceilings. The kitchen ceiling is done and the dining room and laundry ceilings only have a couple of small spots left to do. Hopefully, our upstairs bath and hallway will be completed next weekend and be ready for Ernie, our volunteer taper, to finish the upstairs. Then it will be ready for prime and trim out. We will be making a big push to finish the walls in the kitchen next week; our cabinets are due in on the 8th. Any help we can get unloading them will be greatly appreciated!! The trucking company will give us a 4 hour window of when they will arrive from the Albany warehouse. We will get the times up as soon as we can.
Pat, our electrician, stopped by for a short time Saturday and installed a couple of live outlets on the first and second floors. We don't have to run lines up from the basement in order to work anymore! Thank you from everyone, you made our jobs a lot easier today!!! | January 21st We had another good day at the house on Saturday, January 21st. We were lucky to have a couple of our professional friends back to help us out, Ernie with the sheetrocking and Randy to do some framing. A lot is going on in the house, the outside weather has been terrible but with the heat on and working everyone can work comfortably!! A large portion of the upstairs is sheetrocked as well as a portion of the downstairs ceilings. We now have to concentrate a bit on the kitchen and bathrooms so our plumbers can work their final magic. Kitchen cabinets are a couple of weeks ahead of the original estimate so we can use lots of help in the next few weeks getting ready for them to be installed!!
The guys from Kingsboro lumber were a blessing again making the delivery of materials. Dispite very dificult driving conditions they got our materials to us and off loaded quickly and safely under difficult conditions. | | Dec 1 - 4th
We again had a couple of good days at the house thanks to all our volunteers. Friday, Pat Buhrmaster, our electrician benefactor, was on site to secure the service lines again and hard wire the furnace. He also gave us some direction to start the wiring.
Frontier donated the time of two installers as well as the materials to wire the house. So now Francine and family is all set for "Triple" service all through the entire house. Thank you Frontier!
Saturday we installed the insulation vents and started to wire the upstairs for smoke alarms and lighting. A lot of the blocking was done. Once finished we will be able to install the ceilings upstairs and the rest of the wiring. Next up will be the blowing in of the insulation. All the blown in insulation material is being donated and we are getting a generous break on the labor cost. | | Week of November 28th We have been working diligently to get our partner family in the house as soon as possible. The house has been sided, the porch floor finished, the porch roof built and shingled, and a stoop roof built over the back door. Also, the entire upstairs of the house has been framed, short of a small closet in the back bedroom. We have had many crews from the Walmart Distribution Center, and they have helped us complete many tasks, such as finishing the subfloor upstairs, laying new subfloor in the kitchen, framing and setting the back door, and framing out the wall that separates the kitchen and the downstairs bathroom and laundry room. So we would like to extend our appreciation to Steve Morrison, and all of the volunteers from the Walmart Distribution Center in Johnstown that have come work at the site. Thanks guys!! Last Saturday, December 3rd, consisted of building and cleaning. Board members Megan and Rob started the day by emptying the tool trailer, and collecting all of the tools laying around that weren't being used, and putting them back in their right spots. They were later joined by Ann, and our newest volunteer, C.J. While the site was being cleaned up, Clark and Dan were upstairs pulling double duty. They started prep work for the framing of the closet in the back bedroom, and started fixing the hole in the floor that was left when the old door frame of the back bedroom was removed. Lauren and Karla were quite busy as well, installing blocks between studs for the sheetrock to be screwed to. Framing in the house is almost complete, so we had our electrician, Patrick, stop by the house and discuss plans for the house with John Mott our architect.
| | Week of November 7th The week of November 7th was busy for our board and volunteers.
We had a special group of volunteers from the Walmart Distribution Center in Johnstown that worked with us on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Thursday they helped with framing at the Wilson Street house. On Friday the crew moved over to our Pleasant Avenue house where they worked on a much needed wheelchair ramp. The ramp was to be installed at the close of the Pleasant Avenue project but at the time of completion it was not done because it was not needed. Since then things have changed and to honor our commitment to our partner family it was put on the schedule. Much of the work was accomplished on Friday. Then on Saturday, the Walmart crew finished up except for one missing piece of lumber. The crew from Walmart was amazing! We send out a huge thank you to all of the volunteers for their time and work.
Saturday was another productive day at the Wilson Street house. The day was a bit cold but Ann brought homemade chili and cake to warm everyone up! Thanks Ann! Lots was accomplished! The upstairs is almost completely framed in. Part of the crew was given the task of organizing the tools and materials. | | Saturday, October 29th Another good day at the house. Cold and nasty weather but the snow held off!! The old sideng is all gone and the cleanup done. Roof for the front porch has been framed, ready for sheathing and shingles. Our contractor is due to start installing the windows we had delivered today on monday. The first wall (around the staircase is framed upstails, now we just need to fill in the crayon lines on the floor upstairs with real walls!!! Sylvia treated all royally again today with hot soup, sandwiches and coffee. |
 | October 22nd We had a good day on site Saturday, October 22nd. The delivery of the 2x4"s for framing and sub flooring for upstairs came early and was unloaded by the whole team. Our construction crew completely framed and decked the front porch, even though a few boards fought them by being extremely bowed. The girls, Megan, Karla and Lauren, filled the remaining holes and started installing the sub floor sheets on the upstairs floor. The crew of "The General" Sylvia, Gary and Greg worked fearlessly on ladders and sitting in window frames to remove all of the siding, except for a small patch on the south side of the house. Great Job Guys!!! |
| | Saturday October 15th This was a good workday. A lot of volunteers were on hand, mostly our young demolition crew. Our younger members worked all day ripping off as much siding as they possibly could, both on the ground level, and around the windows. The rest of the day for them was spent cleaning up their mess. The front door was cut out rather quick, and a large delivery showed up. All the team stopped what they were doing, banded together and organized the delivery of the new decking, various size boards, half inch sheathing, and decking for the kitchen floor. While the demo crew was demolishing the old siding, the construction crew was hard at work inside, finishing the last of the window framing. The double-swinging window in Francine's future bedroom was framed from scratch, and the double window in the kitchen was done by modifying the existing frame. All in all Saturday turned out to be a great workday. | | September 24th On the 17th, all hands on deck were upstairs working on studs for a new bedroom, and more window framing. The two windows in the front bedroom were almost finished. We also started the framing for two new windows at the top of the stairs. Mary was back again and was happy to help with everything she was asked to do. She helped out a lot with clean-up, and nailing strips of wood to the studs so the sheet rock will sit level on the wall in small bedroom.
A big thank you goes out to Belleview Builder's Supply, for their quick, on time delivery and unloading of plywood and roof shingles. Belleview made it much easier on our workers too by bringing a boom-truck with a crane and for attachment to unload the truck. Thanks again to Belleview Builder's Supply for helping to make all our jobs easier.
If you would like to take a tour and just to see what we are doing, please stop by on any workday, and ask to speak to a "blue Habitat tee shirt" person. |
Andy works on the front wall framing. More pics on our Facebook page. | | September 14th and 17th THE RAFTERS ARE DONE!!!!!! Thanks to Clark, Rob, Gerry, our newest volunteer Al, and John, a member of John Mott's church, the rafters in the back room have been sistered, and braced. Saturday, September 10th, Clark Rob and Al started the work, but were unable to finish. Richie and John lead a crew of Dan and Megan, and started framing part of the wall upstairs. Lauren, Karla, and Elbert, our basement crew, started to fill the holes in the basement wall with non-shrink grout. It looked like they got more on them than on the wall!!
On Wednesday, September 14th, we had a small crew working while we waited for the new trusses to arrive, which was alright because we only worked for a couple of hours. Rob and John finished the sistering of the rafters, while Richie and John Mott headed the framing of the new windows upstairs. When the new trusses arrived it was all hands on deck as we carried all 15 of them up the driveway and laid them down in the back. Gary Howard left work and stopped by to give a hand as well.

The front wall is now well secured and aligned, and the foundation is almost closed in. After the basement beams are adjusted, we will seal it in and declare that long project done. The first laminated beam is installed on the first floor. The second and third will be installed on the 27th. We had two crews going, one working on the beams, the other – our young, strong volunteers, digging holes for the front porch support posts. With all the help available we were able to dig all three and set the forms despite hitting many LARGE rocks. In the end Rocks 0, young crew 1!!!!! We “just love it when a plan comes together”. |
The "young" crew digging the porch support holes. | | Saturday, August 13th On this workday the volunteers were 20 strong. Because of the great turnout we were able to run four teams. -In the backyard we had a team pulling nails out of boards it was hard work and we all know that "it is not easy being green".
-In the kitchen we had two new volunteers and one of our regulars hanging the support beams from the ceiling. After the beams were up they went upstairs to do the same.
-In the basement, we had our teen crew cleaning out old heating ducks, pulling wires and doing some masonry work. -Once again the girls were "manning" the chop saw and continued to block for sheetrock.
| | Wednesday, Aug. 3rd And the porch came tumbling down... finally ... thanks to our corporate volunteers from Frontier Communications CAT Team, FC Chamber, Ruby & Quiri plus some of our regulars. It was a fun night. The volunteers were standing ready in the rain to move the debris from the fallen porch to the dumpster, but the porch was not ready to come down. In the end Habitat volunteers 1 - porch 0! |
 | | On Saturday, July 30th we had a great turnout of volunteers. Thanks to all who came out - we were able to finally finish the joists in the kitchen floor and the front wall framing. We were also able to attach temporary plywood to the framing so that the front porch can be removed this Wednesday with the help of our corporate volunteers. The second beam in the basement was installed. The final beam which is a replacement for the existing beam will be exchanged once the first two are cemented in. The girls once again were at the chop saw adding blocking to the upstairs this time. | | 6.11.11 Clean up, clean-out and kitchen demo.
